It wasn't until my last year at the University of California in Santa Cruz that I discovered the Scientific Illustration program offered by the Science Communication department. For a year I took classes in black and white illustration, botanical illustration and color illustration from instructors such as Christopher Carothers, Jenny Keller and Ann Caudle. As an undergrad I was able to work side by side with accomplished graduate students to learn the basic techniques for drawing nature. This is a tremendous program and I highly recommend the classes to anyone interested in exploring a career in scientific illustration.
