Stacy Frank, Printmaker

Hand-pulled etchings, lithos and monoprints.

Born in Michigan and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am fortunate to come from an artistic family. As a student at the University of California in Santa Cruz I began my art training in 1991 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in scientific illustration. From 1994 through 2000 I studied with the printmakers Howard Ikemoto, Julie Connell, Paul Roehl and Karen Tossavainen at local college classes and workshops.

Animals, botanicals, treescapes and scenics predominate - this is a direct result of my love of nature and my training in scientific illustration. This region offers an unlimited source of inspiration for field sketching, photography and plein air painting. I enjoy all facets of printmaking but my favorite technique is the most direct one – drypoint. The soft feathered lines, rich blacks and delicate nature that set this method apart are pleasing to me. Since this is a fragile technique the print runs are much smaller, which makes the image more fleeting and precious. Recently I have been exploring color printing and all of the exacting procedures involved in ink combinations and registration. Though the margin for error is greater than in other methods, the results are so much more vibrant than single-color printing.

My work has been exhibited in numerous national art competitions as well as at venues such as The Monterey Museum of Art, The Bolinas Museum, The Springfield Museum and The Triton Museum. All of my print runs range from single monoprint to editions of fifty. My collection is well-archived and constantly growing.

I live in Santa Cruz, California with my husband, Michael and our dog Izzy.
